My art draws its main inspiration form the sea. Boats are a very common theme within my work as I am a trained shipwright and boat builder.

I have spent much of my life on and around the sea.

There is so much to take in and absorb when out on the water and visually I drink it all in and often I think I must capture this and try and share it.

I have a market stall selling my art on Mondays in the coastal town of Newport Pembrokeshire and I get great pleasure from meeting the many people who pass through the place often from more urban areas and I hope that my art helps bring it all together.

Pembrokeshire really does offer a slice of the goodlife and I feel charmed to live here and my work is a way of giving something back.

I work in a number of different mediums, acrylic, watercolour, digital and pen & ink to name but a few.

I find the cleanliness of the digital images help me capture the crisp shadows and reflections that one finds around a harbour on a still bright morning and with paint I can achieve the more atmospheric appeal of a slightly moody sky as the clouds are scudding across and the boats are not leaving the harbour.

I have a small fishing boat, well actually I have a small fleet of boats, but mostly they are works in progress, restoration and the like.

It is on the fishing boat that I like to spend my time with family and friends, picking up pots and seeing what the days catch will be.

It never ceases to fascinate me and again I love to share this experience with anyone who cares to come out with me.

A nice tasty lobster or a beautiful mackerel are a common treat but there is something about the sea, it teaches you to be highly observant and your senses are heightened possibly through it being a sometimes hostile environment but the byproduct of this is that for an artist it is often a sensory overload. When you get back in and calm down a bit it’s great to try and portray a small bit of it in my art.

There is an infinite pool of inspiration on my doorstep.

Many of the scenes that I portray are calm harbours and boats on moorings. Whilst at sea there is too much going on, the movement of the boat, children, dogs, mackerel or lobster pots coming over the side so the next challenge is to try and capture some of this activity and bring a bit of the magic ashore.
